Endeavour Energy Enhances Backup Power for Shellharbour

We are currently completing essential maintenance on Picnic Island to strengthen the reliability of backup power supply for the Shellharbour region. The project involved replacing two poles that support the critical 33kV line, which provides backup during the summer and when network switching is required, helping keep homes and businesses in Warilla and Lake Illawarra powered.

This upgrade follows more than two years of planning, consultation, and engineering assessments, with close collaboration with  Shellharbour City Council, the local community, and Registered Aboriginal Parties to minimise environmental and cultural heritage impacts.

Due to restricted access to Picnic Island, a helicopter is being used to lift and position the pole tops, avoiding the need for heavy equipment on the island and reducing environmental impact. All operations are carried out by trained and qualified pilots and operators within a controlled Helicopter Air Work Zone to ensure safety.

Once the poles are installed, a drone will assist in running a draw wire across the inlet, enabling the installation of the 33kV line. This work reflects our commitment to delivering safe, reliable and affordable power  while protecting environmental and cultural heritage.
