Endeavour Energy celebrates success in recruiting 60% women for apprentice program

One of Western Sydney’s largest employers lays the foundation for state’s massive growth with diverse workforce.

Endeavour Energy, one of the largest employers in Western Sydney, is proud to announce that 60% of its new apprentice recruits from 2022 were women. This remarkable achievement showcases a significant shift in the traditionally male-dominated fields within the energy industry.

As the demand for skilled professionals continues to rise, Endeavour Energy is gearing up to recruit for its next apprentice program. Recognising the changing dynamics and evolving perceptions of gender roles, the company eagerly invites individuals who are passionate about a career in energy.

According to Endeavour Energy's Chief Data, People and Sustainability Officer, the increasing number of women pursuing these roles can be attributed to the progressive mindset of the younger generation.

“Gen Z has been raised to understand that there are no "girls' jobs" or "boys' jobs," breaking down traditional stereotypes and encouraging equal opportunity,” said Melissa Irwin.

“This cultural shift has inspired more women to apply for and succeed in landing these apprenticeships. These new recruits are the future leaders of Endeavour Energy who will take charge of the state’s growing energy infrastructure. Over the next 10-15 years, Western Sydney will become home to nearly half of Sydney’s entire population – that's an extra one million people. Endeavour Energy is deeply embedded in Western Sydney – we understand the region and we know what’s needed to support the growth that is rapidly unfolding here,” she said.

Among the success stories from last year's apprentice program is Jess Black from Camden. Jess, previously an award-winning florist, is a mother of two young boys, and her husband is a firefighter. Demonstrating her determination and adaptability, Jess is currently training to become a Substation Technician.

“You could say this is a transformation from flower to power,” said Jess. “The last 12 months have been so rewarding, I encourage all women to rethink what they are capable of and consider a STEM career. My four-year apprenticeship combines TAFE study and on-the-job practical experience with all course fees, equipment and tools paid for by Endeavour. It’s the perfect career pivot!”

Endeavour Energy plays a vital role in the daily lives of more than 2.7 million people living and working within Sydney’s fastest growing economies including Sydney’s Greater West, the Blue Mountains, the Southern Highlands, Illawarra and the South Coast of NSW, supplying safe and reliable power to homes and businesses. With over 1,800 employees across its catchment area, the company stands as one of the largest employers in Sydney's Greater West.

Endeavour Energy is also one of Australia's fastest-growing electricity networks, connecting 20,000 new customers each year. To continue delivering exceptional service and support to its customers and communities, the company seeks talented individuals who genuinely care about their work and one another.
