Helicopter surveys

As part of our pre-summer bushfire safety preparations, you can expect to see helicopters surveying powerlines between April and July.

Aerial surveys help prevent bushfires by identifying where we need to repair equipment or prune tree branches too close to powerlines.

Completing the surveys now gives us time to complete maintenance before the bushfire season starts in October.

Why we use helicopters

Endeavour Energy’s network has over 20,000 kilometres of overhead powerlines spread across often rugged terrain.

Helicopters reduce the time taken to survey powerlines and allow inspection of otherwise inaccessible areas.

The bird’s-eye view from the air permits better inspection of equipment on the top of poles not visible from the ground.

What you will see

Specialised helicopter crews will conduct the surveys using high-resolution cameras and GPS equipment.

You will see the helicopter flying very slowly 300 metres above the ground as we film the powerlines.

This permits a more thorough inspection as the film can be extensively reviewed after the survey is flown.

More information

Every attempt will be made to minimise inconvenience to residents and livestock during aerial surveys.

Look for notices in your local newspaper indicating when the surveys will be flown in your area.
