Introduction to solar power

This information is intended to assist you in assessing whether installing a solar power system is the right choice for you.  This information has been provided as a guide only.  Please seek your own advice specific to your needs and circumstances from someone qualified to give that advice.

If you're considering installing a solar power system, please note that there have been recent amendments to both NSW and Commonwealth Government schemes that may affect your decision.  Further information about these Schemes can be found at:

Why use solar power?

Installing a solar power system is one way you can save on your energy bills and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.  Solar panels capture the sun's energy and turn it into electric current.  Customers can reduce gas emissions by using solar energy as a replacement for non-renewable electricity.  When considering purchasing a solar generator, however, you need to also consider:

  • solar power systems can have a high upfront cost
  • system prices and installation costs can vary significantly so make sure you obtain several quotes to determine market rates
  • not all homes are suitable - solar power systems perform best on unshaded, north-facing roofs
  • as the owner of the generator, you are responsible for its safety, maintenance and any repairs that are required
  • the installer of the system must be accredited by the Clean Energy Council
