A commitment to the environment

Reducing our carbon emissions

As an energy company, we believe that carbon emissions from our operations present significant environmental challenges to fulfilling our commitment to future generations. Endeavour Energy's role is clear; we must achieve a sustained reduction in carbon emissions while achieving sustainable growth in our business and creating value for our shareholders and customers. As an owner of long life assets, it is particularly important to reflect current and emerging risks associated with carbon emissions into the planning and operation of the electricity network.

We are is committed to the reduction of carbon emissions across our operations and will achieve this through:

  • cost effective elimination of carbon emissions by 20,000 tonnes by 2016;
  • measurement and monitoring of carbon emissions in accordance with regulatory requirements;
  • continual improvement in carbon management across the business; and
  • considering the impact of legislative changes on our business, shareholders and customers.

Endeavour Energy’s carbon reduction program is guided by the National Carbon Offset Standard.

Emissions reporting

Endeavour Energy was one of the first energy service corporations to join the then Greenhouse Challenge program, signing on in September 1996. Under this voluntary program, Endeavour Energy committed to developing and implementing a number of actions designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The Greenhouse Challenge program ceased in 2009 with the introduction of the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act (NGER) in 2007. Under the NGER Act 2007, Endeavour Energy is required to report annually on its greenhouse gas emissions, energy consumption and energy production.

The NGER Act 2007 introduces a single national framework for the reporting and dissemination of information about the greenhouse gas emissions, greenhouse gas projects, and energy use and production of corporations.

The objectives of the NGER Act 2007 are to:

  • underpin the introduction of an emissions trading scheme,
  • inform government policy formulation and the Australian public,
  • help meet Australia’s international reporting obligations,
  • assist Commonwealth, state and territory government programs and activities, and
  • avoid the duplication of similar reporting requirements in the states and territories.

Aligning to the NSW Government Sustainability Policy

The NSW Government Sustainability Policy was released in late 2008. The policy sets targets and strategies for NSW Government agencies to lead by example in the areas of sustainable water and energy use, waste generation, fleet management and sustainable purchasing. The policy is intended as an important step for the NSW Government to meet its commitment of becoming carbon neutral by 2020.

Endeavour Energy has chosen to be guided by the NSW Sustainability Policy to work towards achieving best practice environmental management that aligns with the NSW government.
