Respecting our environmental responsibilities

Environmental Management

At Endeavour Energy we know that environmental performance must continue to evolve if we are to meet the expectations of our stakeholders and the wider community.

Our commitment to the environment, detailed in our Environment Policy, reflects an understanding that our business success is intrinsically linked with the environments and communities in which we operate.  The policy also includes our position statement which defines the future that we will create as we reflect the needs of future generations in our day-to-day operations.

Our pesticide policy

Endeavour Energy and its qualified contractors use pesticides when necessary to control weeds and pests (including weeds, rodents and timber-eating insects), to protect our power poles, and to avoid the dangers that pest-damaged poles can present to the public. Most of the pesticides we use pose low risk to the public. Where stronger pesticides are used, they are applied with care and environmental sensitivity.

In applying best practice to minimise adverse impacts on the environment, all our pesticide appliers are fully trained to comply with relevant legislation and standards.

Keeping the community informed

The Endeavour Energy Pesticide Use Notification Plan has been developed to plan community notification of the use of pesticides in public places, so that measures can be taken to avoid contact.

Tree management

Endeavour Energy recognises the value of trees in the landscape and appreciates that their pruning or removal can be a sensitive and emotional issue. However 90% of all blackouts are caused when trees damage powerlines, so effective management is essential.

As part of a carefully managed 12-month cycle, we employ the services of trained horticulturalists, arborists and tree trimmers to help ensure that we can continue to deliver a safe and reliable electricity supply. While trimming can look severe at first, trees re-grow at a normal rate and training them away from powerlines helps avoid the need to remove them entirely in the future.

We also run electricity services underground to new subdivisions wherever possible, and replace existing overhead assets with underground ones as part of urban consolidation and redevelopment programs.

Pollution Incident Response Management Plan

In 2012, the Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997 was amended and the Protection of the Environment Operations (General) Amendment (Pollution Incident Response Management Plans) Regulation 2012 was gazetted. One of the outcomes of this amendment is a requirement for all holders of an environment protection licence to prepare and implement a pollution incident response management plan.

Endeavour Energy's Narellan Field Service Centre is the only site in the network that holds an environment protection licence. As such, this site now has a pollution incident response management plan.
